LA is home to one of the greenest convention centers in the nation, so it's only natural that the Los Angeles Convention Center will host the world's first ever green marketplace — the GreenXchange Xpo, which will take place October 1-3, 2008. The convention center's role in GreenXchange, sponsored by IDG World Expo and VerdeXchange, brings global attention to sustainability — and Los Angeles — by facilitating the largest, holistic "green exchange" of ideas and commerce in the world. How green is The Los Angeles Convention Center? Its cutting-edge conservation programs include:
- A beverage container recycling program
- A material recovery facility that recycles post-tradeshow unused exhibit material
- A food waste recycling program that converts leftovers into animal feed
- A photovoltaic system that makes the Los Angeles Convention Center the largest solar energy-generating convention center in North America
The convention center has also recently purchased 20 percent of its energy load with renewable sources of energy through the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Green program. By 2008, the convention center is expected to increase its energy load to 100 percent.
